Quebec and Ottawa have announced a joint effort to address the issue of homelessness in Montreal. The two governments have pledged a total of $115 million for emergency housing in the city.
The announcement was made by Quebec’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Andrée Laforest, and Ottawa’s Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Ahmed Hussen. They were joined by Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.
According to Minister Laforest, the funding will be used to create 1,000 new emergency housing units in Montreal. These units will provide temporary shelter for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness.
Minister Hussen emphasized the importance of collaboration between different levels of government in addressing this issue. He stated, “Homelessness is a complex issue that requires a coordinated effort from all levels of government. This investment will help ensure that those in need have a safe and secure place to stay.”
Mayor Plante expressed her gratitude for the funding, stating that it will make a significant impact in the lives of those who are struggling with homelessness in Montreal. She also highlighted the importance of providing not just emergency housing, but also long-term solutions to address the root causes of homelessness.
The funding will be distributed through the Canada-Quebec Agreement on the Homelessness Partnering Strategy. This agreement aims to prevent and reduce homelessness by providing support to individuals and families in need.
In addition to the new emergency housing units, the funding will also be used to support existing shelters and community organizations that provide services to those experiencing homelessness.
This joint effort by Quebec and Ottawa is a step towards addressing the issue of homelessness in Montreal. It is a reminder of the importance of collaboration and investment in finding solutions to this complex issue. With this funding, it is hoped that more individuals and families will have access to safe and secure housing, and ultimately, a better quality of life.
