Saskatoon 'Rock Your Roots' Walk breaks personal record with thousands attendees

Saskatoon’s annual Rock Your Roots Walk has once again broken its personal record, with thousands of attendees coming together to celebrate diversity and promote reconciliation.

The event, which took place on Sunday, saw a diverse crowd of people from all walks of life come together to walk in solidarity and support for Indigenous communities. This year’s walk was particularly special as it marked the 25th anniversary of the event.

Organized by the Saskatoon Open Door Society, the Rock Your Roots Walk aims to bring people from different cultures and backgrounds together to promote understanding and unity. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the society’s programs and services that support newcomers to Canada.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, the event was able to take place in person, with strict safety protocols in place. Attendees were required to wear masks and maintain physical distancing throughout the walk.

The walk began at Victoria Park and continued through the downtown area, with participants carrying flags representing their cultural backgrounds. Along the way, there were performances by Indigenous dancers and musicians, as well as speeches from community leaders and elders.

One of the highlights of the event was the presence of residential school survivors, who were honored and recognized for their resilience and strength. The walk also served as a reminder of the ongoing work towards reconciliation and the importance of acknowledging and learning from the past.

The Rock Your Roots Walk has become a beloved tradition in Saskatoon, with its message of unity and diversity resonating with people of all ages and backgrounds. This year’s record-breaking attendance is a testament to the event’s growing popularity and the community’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and understanding.

The success of the event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the organizers, volunteers, and sponsors. Their efforts have helped make the Rock Your Roots Walk a powerful symbol of hope and unity in Saskatoon.

As the event came to a close, participants were reminded of the importance of continuing to walk together towards a more inclusive and understanding society. The Rock Your Roots Walk has once again proven to be a powerful platform for promoting reconciliation and celebrating diversity in Saskatoon.
