An Edmonton basketball coach is facing serious allegations after being accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a hotel.

According to police, the incident occurred on May 22 at a hotel in the area of 118 Avenue and Wayne Gretzky Drive. The coach, who has not been named, was reportedly staying at the hotel with his team for a tournament.

The victim, a 16-year-old girl, was also staying at the hotel with her team for the same tournament. She alleges that the coach entered her room and sexually assaulted her.

The girl immediately reported the incident to her team’s coach, who then contacted the police. The accused coach was arrested and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

The Edmonton Police Service is urging anyone with information about this incident or any other potential victims to come forward.

In a statement, the Edmonton Amateur Basketball Association (EABA) expressed shock and concern over the allegations. The EABA has suspended the accused coach pending the outcome of the investigation.

The EABA also stated that they have strict policies in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all players and coaches, and they are fully cooperating with the police in their investigation.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper background checks and thorough screening processes for coaches and volunteers working with youth sports teams.

The accused coach is scheduled to appear in court on June 28. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service.
