Kelowna, BC – The cause of a recent building fire in Kelowna is still unknown as police continue to investigate the possibility of squatters being involved.
The fire broke out on Monday evening at a vacant commercial building on the corner of Richter Street and Clement Avenue. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to neighboring buildings.
According to Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Captain, John Kelly, the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. However, upon further investigation, authorities discovered evidence that suggests the building may have been occupied by squatters.
Kelowna RCMP have taken over the investigation and are working to determine the cause of the fire. They are also looking into the possibility of squatters being involved and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Squatters, also known as trespassers, are individuals who occupy a property without the owner’s permission. They often seek shelter in abandoned or vacant buildings, which can pose a safety hazard to both themselves and the surrounding community.
In light of this incident, the Kelowna Fire Department is reminding the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity in vacant buildings. They also urge property owners to secure their buildings to prevent unauthorized access.
