The City of Winnipeg is seeking a significant increase in the budget for the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus, with a request for an additional $6.7 million.
According to city officials, the proposed increase is necessary to cover the rising costs of construction and materials for the project, which is set to include a new multi-purpose fieldhouse, an indoor pool, and a community centre.
The initial budget for the project, which was approved in 2019, was set at $46.6 million. However, due to unforeseen circumstances and market conditions, the estimated cost has now risen to $53.3 million.
City Councillor Brian Mayes, who represents the St. Vital ward where the campus will be located, says the increase is necessary to ensure the project is completed to the highest standards.
“We want to make sure that this facility is built to last and meets the needs of the community for years to come,” Mayes said in a statement.
The South Winnipeg Recreation Campus is expected to serve as a hub for sports and recreational activities in the area, providing much-needed facilities for residents of all ages.
The proposed budget increase will now go to the city’s Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks for review before being presented to City Council for final approval.
If approved, construction on the project is expected to begin in the fall of 2021, with an estimated completion date of 2023.
The City of Winnipeg is committed to providing its residents with top-notch recreational facilities, and the proposed increase in the budget for the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus is a testament to that commitment. Stay tuned for further updates on this important project.
