Two listeriosis deaths in Ontario linked to plant-based milk recall: MOH

Two deaths in Ontario have been linked to a recent recall of plant-based milk products due to a potential risk of listeriosis, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).

The MOH issued a statement on Tuesday, stating that the deaths were reported in the province and were linked to the consumption of plant-based milk products that were recalled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on January 22.

Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, which can be found in food products such as deli meats, soft cheeses, and unpasteurized milk. It can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues, and can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems.

The CFIA issued a recall for certain plant-based milk products from the brand “The Very Good Butchers” due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The products were sold in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia and were distributed through online orders and retail stores.

The MOH is urging consumers who have purchased these products to not consume them and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. They are also advising individuals who have consumed these products and are experiencing symptoms of listeriosis to seek medical attention immediately.

The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation and is working with the company to ensure that all affected products are removed from the market. They are also monitoring for any additional cases of listeriosis that may be linked to the recalled products.

The MOH is reminding the public to always follow safe food handling practices, including washing hands before and after handling food, cooking food thoroughly, and refrigerating perishable foods promptly. They are also encouraging individuals to check the CFIA’s website for any updates on the recall and to contact their healthcare provider if they have any concerns.

The safety and well-being of Canadians is of utmost importance, and the MOH and CFIA are working diligently to address this issue and prevent any further cases of listeriosis. It is crucial for consumers to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families from potential foodborne illnesses.
