Metrolinx, the transportation agency for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, has announced a new policy that will ban certain types of e-bike batteries on their trains and buses.
The decision comes after concerns were raised about the safety of lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in e-bikes. These batteries have been known to overheat and catch fire, posing a risk to both passengers and the vehicles.
Starting on July 1, 2021, Metrolinx will no longer allow e-bikes with batteries that exceed 160 watt-hours on their trains and buses. This includes both personal e-bikes and those used for bike-sharing programs.
According to Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins, the agency has been monitoring the safety of e-bike batteries for some time and decided to implement this ban as a precautionary measure.
“We want to ensure the safety of our passengers and our vehicles,” Aikins said in a statement. “While we understand the convenience and popularity of e-bikes, we have to prioritize the safety of our customers and staff.”
The 160 watt-hour limit is based on international standards for lithium-ion batteries and is considered a safe threshold for transportation. E-bikes with batteries that exceed this limit will not be allowed on Metrolinx vehicles, even if they are within the legal limit for personal use.
This new policy has sparked some backlash from e-bike users, who argue that the ban unfairly targets them and limits their transportation options. However, Metrolinx maintains that safety is their top priority and they are not willing to compromise on it.
In addition to the battery ban, Metrolinx is also implementing stricter guidelines for the transportation of e-bikes on their vehicles. E-bikes must now be securely fastened to a bike rack or stored in a designated area on the vehicle. This is to prevent any potential hazards or damage to the vehicles.
Metrolinx is also working with e-bike manufacturers to develop safer battery options that meet their standards. They are also exploring the possibility of installing charging stations at their stations and terminals for e-bike users.
The agency is also reminding passengers that traditional bicycles are still allowed on their vehicles, as long as they are properly secured and do not pose a safety risk.
This new policy by Metrolinx is a proactive step towards ensuring the safety of their passengers and vehicles. While it may inconvenience some e-bike users, it is a necessary measure to prevent any potential accidents or incidents.
