Measles identified in Ontario adult who recently travelled through Toronto Pearson airport

A case of measles has been identified in an adult who recently traveled through Toronto Pearson Airport, health officials in Ontario have confirmed.

According to a statement released by Peel Public Health, the individual had recently returned from a trip abroad and had a layover at the airport on February 12. The individual was not showing any symptoms at the time of travel, but developed symptoms upon returning home.

The individual is currently in isolation and receiving medical treatment. Peel Public Health is working closely with the individual and their close contacts to prevent further spread of the highly contagious virus.

Measles is a serious and highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. It can be spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or by coming into contact with an infected person’s saliva or mucus. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

Peel Public Health is urging anyone who may have been at Toronto Pearson Airport on February 12 between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to monitor themselves for symptoms until March 5. They are also reminding the public to ensure they are up to date on their measles vaccinations.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vaccinations in preventing the spread of diseases. Measles can be prevented with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is routinely given to children in Ontario. However, adults who have not been vaccinated or are unsure of their vaccination status should speak to their healthcare provider.

Peel Public Health is also reminding the public to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and covering coughs and sneezes, to help prevent the spread of measles and other illnesses.

Anyone who develops symptoms of measles is advised to contact their healthcare provider before visiting a healthcare facility to prevent further spread of the virus.

The investigation into this case is ongoing and Peel Public Health will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, they are urging the public to remain calm and follow the recommended precautions to prevent the spread of measles.
