A Medicine Hat woman has been charged after allegedly stealing $60,000 from the Redcliff Legion.
According to police, the incident occurred between January 2019 and December 2020, when the woman was employed as the treasurer for the Redcliff Legion Branch 6.
The woman, who has not been named, has been charged with one count of theft over $5,000 and one count of fraud over $5,000.
The Redcliff Legion has been a staple in the community for over 90 years, providing support and services to veterans and their families. The theft of such a significant amount of money has left many members feeling betrayed and disappointed.
The investigation was launched after discrepancies were discovered during a routine audit. The woman was immediately removed from her position and the police were notified.
The Redcliff RCMP worked closely with the Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-NWT Command to gather evidence and build a case against the accused. The woman was arrested on March 10 and has since been released on bail.
The Redcliff Legion has stated that they are taking steps to ensure that this type of incident does not happen again in the future. They have implemented new financial controls and are working to regain the trust of their members and the community.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on April 14. In the meantime, the Redcliff Legion is focused on moving forward and continuing to serve their community.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in organizations, especially those that rely on public support. The Redcliff Legion is committed to upholding these values and will continue to do so in the future.
