Vancouver 4-20 celebration and protest a no-show at Sunset Beach amid police crackdown

Vancouver’s annual 4/20 celebration and protest, which typically draws thousands of people to Sunset Beach, was noticeably absent this year due to a police crackdown.

Despite the event being cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, a small group of protesters still gathered at the beach on Tuesday, April 20th. However, they were met with a heavy police presence, including officers on horseback and in riot gear.

The 4/20 event, which advocates for the legalization of marijuana, has been a controversial topic in Vancouver for years. In the past, it has drawn both supporters and critics, with some arguing that it promotes drug use and others arguing for the right to peaceful protest.

This year, the Vancouver Park Board had denied organizers a permit for the event, citing concerns over public safety and COVID-19 restrictions. Despite this, the organizers had initially planned to go ahead with the event, but ultimately decided to cancel it after discussions with the city and police.

In a statement, the Vancouver Police Department said they were prepared to enforce the park board’s decision and ensure public safety. They also warned that anyone who attended the event could face fines or even arrest.

The lack of a 4/20 event at Sunset Beach this year was a stark contrast to previous years, where the beach would be filled with vendors, live music, and a haze of marijuana smoke. Instead, the beach was quiet and empty, with only a few people walking by.

Some residents in the area expressed relief at the absence of the event, citing concerns over noise, litter, and public safety. Others, however, were disappointed that the event did not take place, viewing it as a tradition and a way to advocate for their cause.

Despite the cancellation of the event, the debate over the 4/20 celebration and protest in Vancouver is far from over. With conflicting opinions and ongoing discussions between organizers, city officials, and police, it remains to be seen what the future holds for this controversial event.
