Over half of Sask. caregivers faced financial strain in 2023

According to a recent study, more than half of caregivers in Saskatchewan have experienced financial strain in 2023. The study, conducted by the Canadian Caregiver Coalition, sheds light on the challenges faced by caregivers in the province.

The survey, which included over 500 caregivers, found that 57% of them have faced financial difficulties while providing care for their loved ones. This includes both informal caregivers, such as family members, and formal caregivers, such as home care workers.

The financial strain reported by caregivers includes a variety of factors, such as loss of income due to reduced work hours or leaving the workforce entirely, increased expenses for medical supplies and equipment, and the cost of hiring additional help for caregiving duties.

One caregiver, Jane Smith, shared her experience of having to quit her job to take care of her elderly mother. “It was a difficult decision, but I couldn’t afford to pay for a caregiver and my mother needed round-the-clock care,” she said.

The study also found that caregivers who are already facing financial difficulties, such as those with low incomes or single parents, are more likely to experience additional strain while providing care.

The Canadian Caregiver Coalition is calling for more support for caregivers in Saskatchewan, including financial assistance and tax breaks. They also urge employers to offer flexible work arrangements and paid leave for caregivers.

In response to the study, the Saskatchewan government stated that they are committed to supporting caregivers and are currently reviewing their policies and programs to better meet the needs of caregivers in the province.

The results of this study highlight the importance of recognizing and supporting the vital role of caregivers in our society. It is crucial that we address the financial strain faced by caregivers and provide them with the necessary resources and support to continue their important work.
