Committee rejects plan to slash $3M from firefighters

A proposal to cut $3 million from the budget of Winnipeg’s firefighters has been rejected by a city committee.

The proposal, put forth by the city’s finance department, aimed to reduce the fire department’s budget by $3 million in order to help balance the city’s overall budget. However, the committee voted against the proposal, citing concerns about the potential impact on public safety.

The decision was met with relief and gratitude from the city’s firefighters, who have been vocal about the potential consequences of such a significant budget cut. Firefighters’ union president Alex Forrest expressed his appreciation for the committee’s decision, stating that it shows they understand the importance of maintaining adequate funding for emergency services.

The rejected proposal would have resulted in the closure of two fire stations and the elimination of 34 firefighter positions. This would have led to longer response times and reduced coverage for certain areas of the city, potentially putting citizens at risk.

City councillor and committee member Sherri Rollins acknowledged the difficult decision they faced, but ultimately believed that public safety should be the top priority. She also noted that the fire department has already made significant efforts to reduce their budget, and further cuts would have a detrimental impact on their ability to effectively serve the community.

The rejected proposal will now go to the city’s executive policy committee for further review and discussion. The final decision on the fire department’s budget will be made by city council in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, the city’s firefighters can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their budget will not be slashed, and the safety of Winnipeg’s citizens will not be compromised.
