Collision with Police Cruiser Leads to Impaired Arrest – Fort Erie

Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 5 District (Fort Erie/Ridgeway) uniform officers are investigating after a car collided with a police cruiser in Fort Erie.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m. Police received an impaired driving call for service in the area of Dominion Road and Gorham Road in the Town of Fort Erie. Witnesses reported that a male exited an area business, stumbled into a vehicle, and drove away. The vehicle was observed to have a flat tire and its exhaust was dragging on the roadway.

Police responded to the area of Bernard Avenue and Dominion Road where the suspect’s vehicle was observed. Out of a concern for public safety, police cruisers were strategically located behind and in front of the suspect vehicle with their emergency lights and sirens activated. The suspect vehicle continued driving forward until the vehicle collided with a police cruiser and veered off the roadway and into a ditch.

No injuries were sustained as a result of the collision; however, grounds were formed that the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.

Duncan SIMPSON (53 years) of Fort Erie is charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

SIMPSON was also charged with six additional provincial offences. In addition to the various Criminal and Provincial offences SIMPSON has been issued an Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS). The ADLS, is issued to everyone charged with impaired driving offences. The ADLS prohibits SIMPSON from operating a motor vehicle for 90 days from the date it was issued.

SIMPSON has been released on a Form 10 – Undertaking with a future court date.
