A survivor of a tragic shooting in Rexdale, Toronto is speaking out about the devastating loss of her two brothers.
On April 20, 2021, a shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Rexdale apartment building, leaving five people injured and two dead. Among the victims were 27-year-old Jovane Clarke and 18-year-old Kwame Duodu, who were brothers.
In an exclusive interview with CTV News, the surviving sister, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared her harrowing experience of that fateful night.
“I heard gunshots and immediately knew something was wrong,” she recalled. “I ran outside and saw my brothers lying on the ground. I tried to help them, but it was too late.”
The sister described her brothers as kind, loving, and hardworking individuals. She expressed her disbelief and devastation at their senseless deaths.
“I can’t believe they’re gone. They were my best friends and now I have to live without them,” she said tearfully.
The shooting has left the community of Rexdale in shock and mourning. Many residents have come together to offer support and condolences to the family of the victims.
Toronto Police have launched a homicide investigation and are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
“We are determined to bring those responsible for this heinous act to justice,” said Toronto Police Chief James Ramer in a statement.
The sister hopes that by speaking out, she can bring attention to the devastating impact of gun violence and prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy.
“I don’t want anyone else to go through what my family is going through. We need to put an end to this violence,” she said.
The community has also organized a vigil to honor the lives of Jovane and Kwame and to show support for their family. The vigil will take place on April 27 at the scene of the shooting.
As the investigation continues, the sister is left to grieve the loss of her brothers and to seek justice for their deaths. She hopes that their memory will live on and serve as a reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence.
