Police seize loaded, prohibited rifle from woman in Merritt, B.C.

Merritt, B.C. – A woman in Merritt, British Columbia has been arrested after police seized a loaded prohibited rifle from her possession.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when officers from the Merritt RCMP detachment were conducting a routine patrol in the area. They noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on the side of the road and decided to investigate.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers noticed a woman sitting in the driver’s seat with a rifle on her lap. The rifle was later identified as a prohibited firearm, which is illegal to possess in Canada.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was immediately taken into custody. The officers then conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and found a loaded magazine and ammunition for the rifle.

The woman has been charged with multiple firearms-related offences and is currently in police custody. The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be laid.

Sergeant Josh Roda, the acting detachment commander for the Merritt RCMP, commended the officers for their quick and decisive actions.

“The seizure of this prohibited firearm is a testament to the dedication and vigilance of our officers in keeping our community safe,” said Sgt. Roda.

He also reminded the public to report any suspicious activity to the police and to never hesitate in contacting them if they have any information that could assist in their investigations.
