Chatham, ON – As the nation prepares to honor and remember those who have served in the armed forces, a special Veterans Memorial Day service will be held at Arnold Cemetery.
The service, organized by the Chatham-Kent Veterans Association, will take place on November 11th at 11:00 am. The ceremony will include a wreath-laying, a moment of silence, and the playing of “The Last Post” and “Reveille.”
According to the Chatham-Kent Veterans Association, this year’s service will have a special focus on the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The association is encouraging all veterans, their families, and the general public to attend and pay their respects.
“We must never forget the sacrifices made by our brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country,” said John Smith, president of the Chatham-Kent Veterans Association. “This year, as we mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, it is especially important to honor and remember those who fought for our freedom.”
The service will also feature a keynote address by retired Lieutenant Colonel James Brown, who served in the Canadian Armed Forces for over 30 years. Brown will share his experiences and reflections on the importance of honoring and supporting our veterans.
In addition to the service, the Chatham-Kent Veterans Association is also hosting a fundraising dinner on November 10th at the Chatham Legion. All proceeds from the dinner will go towards supporting local veterans and their families.
“We are grateful for the support of our community and we hope to see many people at the service and dinner,” said Smith. “It is a time to come together and show our appreciation for those who have served and continue to serve our country.”
The Chatham-Kent Veterans Association is also reminding the public to wear a poppy in the days leading up to Veterans Memorial Day, as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for our veterans.
