A Calgary woman is facing multiple charges after an explosion in her apartment building left her neighbours shaken and displaced.
According to the Calgary Police Service, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening in the 100 block of 10 Street Northwest. Emergency crews were called to the scene after reports of an explosion and fire in one of the units.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the explosion had originated from a unit on the third floor. The blast had caused significant damage to the apartment and the surrounding units, forcing residents to evacuate.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the explosion. However, the building sustained structural damage, and residents were unable to return to their homes.
The Calgary Fire Department’s arson unit was called in to investigate the cause of the explosion. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the explosion was caused by a homemade explosive device.
The resident of the unit, a 35-year-old woman, was arrested and charged with possession of an explosive substance, mischief causing damage over $5,000, and causing an explosion likely to cause serious bodily harm or death.
Neighbours of the woman expressed shock and concern over the incident. Many were unaware of the woman’s activities and were disturbed to learn that she had been creating explosive devices in her apartment.
The Calgary Police Service has assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community. However, they are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
The affected residents have been temporarily relocated to a nearby hotel while the building undergoes repairs. The Red Cross has also been providing support to those affected by the explosion.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of homemade explosive devices and the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The Calgary Police Service and the Calgary Fire Department are continuing to investigate the incident, and further charges may be laid. In the meantime, the community is coming together to support those affected and ensure their safety.
