Toronto residents should prepare for potential hail the size of toonies as a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the city.
According to Environment Canada, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Toronto and surrounding areas, including Peel, Halton, and York regions. The watch was issued on Tuesday afternoon and is expected to remain in effect until later in the evening.
The weather agency warns that the thunderstorms could bring strong winds, heavy rain, and large hail to the region. In particular, hail the size of toonies, which are approximately 28 millimeters in diameter, could be a possibility.
Residents are advised to take precautions and stay indoors if possible during the storm. If caught outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle. Avoid seeking shelter under trees or near bodies of water.
The severe thunderstorm watch comes after a hot and humid day in Toronto, with temperatures reaching the high 20s and a humidex value of 35. The combination of heat and humidity can often lead to the development of severe thunderstorms.
Environment Canada also advises residents to stay informed about the weather conditions by regularly checking for updates and warnings. In case of a severe thunderstorm warning, take immediate action to protect yourself and your property.
This is a developing story and CP24 will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Stay safe, Toronto.
