Employer considers union plan in week two of Metro Vancouver HandyDART transit strike

Metro Vancouver HandyDART transit strike enters second week as employer considers union plan

The Metro Vancouver HandyDART transit strike has entered its second week, causing disruptions for thousands of passengers who rely on the service for accessible transportation.

The strike, which began on December 10, is a result of a contract dispute between the union representing HandyDART drivers and their employer, MVT Canadian Bus Inc. The union, Unifor Local 111, is seeking better wages and working conditions for its members.

In response to the strike, MVT Canadian Bus Inc. has been operating a reduced service, with only essential trips being provided. This has left many passengers, including those with disabilities and seniors, struggling to get to their appointments and daily activities.

As negotiations between the union and the employer continue, the union has put forward a new proposal that they hope will end the strike. The proposal includes a wage increase of 3.5% in the first year and 3% in the second year, as well as improved benefits and working conditions.

The employer has stated that they are considering the proposal, but have not yet made a decision. In the meantime, they are urging the union to return to the bargaining table to continue negotiations.

The HandyDART service, which provides door-to-door transportation for people with disabilities and seniors, is an essential service for many in the Metro Vancouver area. The strike has caused significant inconvenience and frustration for passengers, who are calling for a resolution to the dispute.

Both the union and the employer have expressed a desire to reach a fair and reasonable agreement, but have yet to come to a resolution. As the strike continues into its second week, passengers are left waiting for a resolution that will allow them to resume their daily routines.
