Manitoba Grand Chief to Lie in State at Provincial Legislature on Wednesday

The province of Manitoba will be honoring the life and legacy of Grand Chief Arlen Dumas, who passed away on January 10th, by holding a lying in state ceremony at the provincial legislature on Wednesday.

Grand Chief Dumas, who served as the leader of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, was a highly respected and influential figure in the Indigenous community. He was known for his tireless advocacy for Indigenous rights and his dedication to improving the lives of First Nations people in Manitoba.

The lying in state ceremony will begin at 9:00 am and will be open to the public. It will be held in the rotunda of the provincial legislature, where Grand Chief Dumas’ casket will be on display for people to pay their respects.

Premier Brian Pallister and other government officials will be in attendance to honor Grand Chief Dumas and offer their condolences to his family and loved ones. The ceremony will also include traditional Indigenous ceremonies and prayers, as well as speeches from community leaders and members of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

Following the lying in state ceremony, a funeral service will be held at the Thunderbird House in Winnipeg at 1:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person.

In honor of Grand Chief Dumas’ legacy, the flags at the provincial legislature will be flown at half-mast on Wednesday. The province has also declared a day of mourning in his honor.
