The Calgary Stampeders have made a significant addition to their practice roster, signing former NFL quarterback P.J. Walker.
Walker, who played for the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts, brings a wealth of experience to the Stampeders. The 26-year-old spent three seasons in the NFL, appearing in five games and throwing for 15 completions and 161 yards.
Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson expressed his excitement about adding Walker to the team, stating, “P.J. is a talented quarterback with a strong arm and great mobility. We believe he has the potential to be a valuable asset to our team.”
Walker’s signing comes after the Stampeders lost starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell to a broken leg earlier this season. With Mitchell out for the remainder of the year, the team has been searching for a suitable replacement.
Walker, who played college football at Temple University, also has experience in the XFL and the Canadian Football League. In 2020, he led the XFL in passing yards and touchdowns before the league suspended operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Stampeders are hopeful that Walker’s versatility and experience will make him a valuable addition to the team’s quarterback depth chart. He will join fellow quarterbacks Jake Maier and Michael O’Connor on the practice roster.
Fans will have to wait and see if Walker will make an appearance on the field for the Stampeders this season. However, his signing is a promising move for the team as they continue to push for a playoff spot in the CFL’s West Division.
The Stampeders’ next game is on September 18 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. It remains to be seen if Walker will be activated for the game, but his presence on the practice roster is a positive step for the team.
