Winnipeg, MB – Fire crews in Winnipeg were called to respond to a fire on Young Street on Tuesday evening.
According to reports, the fire broke out in a residential building on the 500 block of Young Street around 6:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.
Residents in the area were quickly evacuated as crews worked to contain the fire. No injuries have been reported at this time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it may have started in the basement of the building. The extent of the damage is also unknown at this time.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control within an hour, but remained on the scene for several hours to ensure there were no hot spots or flare-ups.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is reminding residents to always have working smoke alarms in their homes and to have a fire escape plan in case of emergencies.
Young Street was temporarily closed to traffic while crews worked to extinguish the fire, but has since been reopened.
