Canadian snowboarder killed in Utah avalanche, authorities say

A Canadian snowboarder has tragically lost his life in an avalanche in Utah, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the backcountry of the Uinta Mountains, about 80 kilometres east of Salt Lake City. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Jake Burton Carpenter, was snowboarding with a group of friends when the avalanche struck.

According to the Utah Avalanche Center, the group was traversing a steep slope when the avalanche was triggered. Carpenter was caught in the slide and buried under the snow. His friends were able to locate him and dig him out, but he was unresponsive.

Despite their efforts to revive him, Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Carpenter was a well-known figure in the snowboarding community, having founded the popular snowboard brand Burton in 1977. He was also a pioneer in the sport, helping to popularize snowboarding and bring it to the mainstream.

The Utah Avalanche Center has issued a warning for backcountry travelers, stating that the avalanche danger in the area is currently high. They urge people to exercise caution and check the avalanche forecast before heading out.
