COSAR’s K9 Barrett takes time off after busy rescue work

Kelowna, BC – After months of tireless rescue work, COSAR’s K9 Barrett is taking some well-deserved time off.

The highly trained search and rescue dog has been a crucial member of the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team, helping to locate missing individuals and bring them to safety.

Barrett’s handler, Mike, shared on social media that the K9 has been involved in numerous successful rescues over the past few months, including finding a lost hiker in the Myra Canyon area and locating a missing person in the backcountry near Kelowna.

However, the intense and demanding nature of Barrett’s work has taken a toll on the loyal canine. Mike explained that Barrett has been showing signs of fatigue and stress, prompting the decision to give him a break.

“Barrett has been working non-stop and has been showing signs of exhaustion. As his handler, it’s my responsibility to ensure his well-being and give him the rest he needs,” Mike wrote.

During his time off, Barrett will be enjoying some much-needed rest and relaxation, as well as receiving specialized care and attention from his handler.

The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team expressed their gratitude for Barrett’s dedication and hard work, stating that he has been an invaluable asset to their team.

“Barrett has been an incredible asset to our team and has played a crucial role in many successful rescues. We are grateful for his service and are committed to providing him with the best care possible,” said COSAR’s search manager, Duane Tresnich.

Barrett’s time off will also allow him to recharge and prepare for any future rescue missions that may come his way.

The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team reminds the public to always be prepared when venturing into the backcountry and to never hesitate to call for help if needed. They also urge everyone to give Barrett and other search and rescue dogs the space and respect they deserve while on duty.

As Barrett takes some time off to rest and recover, the community is grateful for his dedication and service, and eagerly awaits his return to the front lines of search and rescue.
