A group in Kelowna is taking their fight to end tax breaks for religious organizations to city hall.
The group, called “End Tax Exemptions for Religious Organizations” (ETERO), is advocating for the removal of tax exemptions for religious institutions in the city. They argue that these organizations should not receive special treatment and should be subject to the same tax laws as other businesses and non-profit organizations.
According to ETERO, religious organizations in Kelowna receive approximately $1.5 million in tax exemptions each year. This includes exemptions for property taxes, business taxes, and utilities. The group believes that this money could be better used to fund essential services and infrastructure in the city.
ETERO has been gathering support through an online petition, which has garnered over 1,000 signatures. They also plan to present their case to city council at an upcoming meeting.
The group’s spokesperson, Sarah Johnson, stated that their goal is not to attack any specific religion, but rather to promote fairness and equality in taxation. She argues that religious organizations should not be given preferential treatment simply because of their beliefs.
On the other hand, some religious leaders in the community are pushing back against ETERO’s campaign. They argue that their organizations provide valuable services to the community and should not be burdened with additional taxes.
City council members have yet to take a stance on the issue, but Mayor Colin Basran has stated that he is open to hearing both sides of the argument.
This debate over tax exemptions for religious organizations is not unique to Kelowna. Similar discussions have taken place in other cities across Canada, with some municipalities choosing to remove tax breaks for religious institutions.
As ETERO continues to push for change in Kelowna, it remains to be seen how city council will respond to their demands. But one thing is clear – this issue has sparked a passionate debate about the role of religion in taxation and the importance of fairness in our society.
