The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has officially terminated their investigation against the Brantford Police Service due to a woman’s lack of serious injury.
According to the SIU, the incident occurred on May 15, 2021, when the Brantford Police responded to a call regarding a woman in distress. The woman was reportedly armed with a knife and was threatening to harm herself.
Upon arrival, the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and negotiate with the woman. However, she refused to comply and continued to make threats. As a result, the officers used a taser to subdue her and take her into custody.
The SIU was notified of the incident and launched an investigation to determine if the officers’ use of force was justified. After reviewing all the evidence and conducting interviews with witnesses, the SIU concluded that the officers’ actions were necessary and justified given the circumstances.
Furthermore, the SIU found that the woman did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of the taser deployment. Therefore, they have terminated their investigation and will not be laying any charges against the officers involved.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault. Their mandate is to ensure transparency and accountability in the conduct of police officers.
In this case, the SIU has determined that the officers acted appropriately and within the scope of their duties. The Brantford Police Service has also cooperated fully with the investigation, and their prompt response to the call helped to prevent any further harm to the woman.
The SIU’s decision to terminate the investigation serves as a reminder of the difficult and often dangerous situations that police officers face in the line of duty. It also highlights the importance of proper training and protocols in handling mental health crises.
The Brantford Police Service has expressed their satisfaction with the SIU’s findings and will continue to work towards maintaining the safety and well-being of the community.
