Edmonton City Council Passes Bylaw Requiring Life Jackets on City Waterways
In a unanimous decision, the Edmonton City Council has passed a new bylaw that requires individuals to wear life jackets while on city waterways. This bylaw, which was proposed by Councillor Jane Smith, aims to improve water safety and prevent drowning incidents in the city.
According to statistics from the Lifesaving Society, there were 23 drowning deaths in Alberta in 2020, with 10 of those occurring in Edmonton. This alarming number prompted Councillor Smith to take action and propose the bylaw, which she believes will save lives.
Under the new bylaw, anyone using a watercraft, including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, on city waterways must wear a life jacket at all times. This includes both adults and children, and failure to comply can result in a fine of up to $500.
The bylaw also requires all watercraft rental companies to provide life jackets to their customers and ensure that they are worn properly. This is a crucial step in promoting water safety, as many drowning incidents involve individuals who were not wearing a life jacket.
In addition to the mandatory life jacket requirement, the bylaw also includes a provision for enforcement. Bylaw officers will be patrolling city waterways and have the authority to issue fines to those who are not following the bylaw.
The City of Edmonton has also launched a public education campaign to raise awareness about the new bylaw and the importance of wearing a life jacket while on the water. This campaign includes posters, social media posts, and information on the city’s website.
The bylaw has received widespread support from the community, with many residents and organizations applauding the City Council for taking action to improve water safety. The Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, which responds to water-related emergencies, has also expressed their support for the bylaw.
The new bylaw will go into effect immediately, and the City of Edmonton is urging all residents to comply with the mandatory life jacket requirement to ensure the safety of themselves and others while enjoying the city’s beautiful waterways.
