The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were in attendance at the annual Smoke ‘N Spurs event in Mattawa this past weekend. The event, which is in its 11th year, is a popular gathering for horse enthusiasts and features a variety of activities and competitions.
According to OPP Constable Michelle Simard, the event was a great opportunity for the police to connect with the community and promote safety. “We always look forward to participating in events like this, where we can interact with the public in a positive and fun environment,” she stated.
The OPP set up a booth at the event, where they provided information on various safety topics such as ATV safety, distracted driving, and the importance of wearing a helmet while riding a horse. They also had a display of their police vehicles, which were a hit with the attendees, especially the children.
In addition to promoting safety, the OPP also took part in the event’s parade, which featured a variety of horse-drawn carriages and wagons. The officers rode on horseback, showcasing their equestrian skills and adding to the festive atmosphere.
The Smoke ‘N Spurs event also included a rodeo, barrel racing, and other horse-related competitions. The OPP were on hand to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators, and to assist with any emergencies that may have arisen.
