The Jim Abernethy Challenge, an annual fundraising event to support the fight against blood cancers, celebrated its 5th year this past weekend. The event, organized by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC), brought together participants from all over the country to raise awareness and funds for this important cause.
The challenge, named after Jim Abernethy, a former LLSC board member who lost his battle with leukemia in 2015, consists of a 5km walk or run, followed by a 10km bike ride. This year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually, with participants completing the challenge in their own communities.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the LLSC was able to raise over $100,000 through the Jim Abernethy Challenge, with all proceeds going towards blood cancer research and patient support programs. This year’s event also saw an increase in participation, with over 500 individuals taking part in the virtual challenge.
