Jim Abernethy Challenge marks 5th year fighting blood cancers

Real True News

The Jim Abernethy Challenge, an annual fundraising event to support the fight against blood cancers, celebrated its 5th year this past weekend. The event, organized by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC), brought together participants from all over the country to raise awareness and funds for this important cause.

The challenge, named after Jim Abernethy, a former LLSC board member who lost his battle with leukemia in 2015, consists of a 5km walk or run, followed by a 10km bike ride. This year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually, with participants completing the challenge in their own communities.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the LLSC was able to raise over $100,000 through the Jim Abernethy Challenge, with all proceeds going towards blood cancer research and patient support programs. This year’s event also saw an increase in participation, with over 500 individuals taking part in the virtual challenge.

According to LLSC CEO, Alicia Talarico, the success of the Jim Abernethy Challenge is a testament to the dedication and resilience of the community in the face of adversity. “We are incredibly grateful to all the participants, donors, and volunteers who made this year’s event a success,” she said. “Their support will make a significant impact in the fight against blood cancers.”

The LLSC is the largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research in Canada. Since its inception in 1955, the organization has invested over $40 million in research, leading to significant advancements in the treatment and survival rates of blood cancer patients.

The Jim Abernethy Challenge is just one of the many initiatives undertaken by the LLSC to raise awareness and funds for blood cancer research. The organization also offers support services to patients and their families, including financial assistance, educational resources, and support groups.

As the LLSC continues its mission to find a cure for blood cancers, events like the Jim Abernethy Challenge play a crucial role in bringing the community together and making a difference in the lives of those affected by these diseases. With the continued support of individuals and organizations, the LLSC is confident in its ability to make a positive impact in the fight against blood cancers.
