The annual Kelowna Marathon, set to take place this Sunday, is expected to have a significant impact on roads, transit, and parking in the city.
According to organizers, the marathon will start at 7:30 am at City Park and will follow a route through downtown Kelowna, along the waterfront, and through the Mission area before finishing back at City Park. The event is expected to attract over 1,500 participants, including both runners and walkers.
Due to the marathon, several roads will be closed or have limited access throughout the day. These include Water Street, Bernard Avenue, and Lakeshore Road. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and to expect delays. The closures will be in effect from 6:30 am to 2:00 pm.
Transit users should also be aware of potential delays and detours. BC Transit has announced that several bus routes will be affected by the marathon, including routes 1, 2, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 97. Passengers are advised to check the BC Transit website for specific route changes and to plan their trips accordingly.
In addition, parking in the downtown area will be limited due to road closures and the marathon’s start and finish line being located at City Park. Organizers are encouraging participants and spectators to use alternative modes of transportation, such as walking, biking, or taking public transit, to get to the event.
The Kelowna Marathon is a popular event that not only promotes physical activity but also raises funds for local charities. This year, the event will be supporting the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation and the Central Okanagan Food Bank.
Organizers are reminding participants to arrive early and to follow all COVID-19 safety protocols, including wearing masks when not actively participating in the race and maintaining physical distancing.
