After 10 days of a hunger strike, a group of McGill University students have ended their protest against the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The students, who were part of the group “McGill Students in Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights,” began their hunger strike on April 12th in an effort to raise awareness and show support for the Palestinian people.
Their protest was sparked by the recent escalation of violence in the region, which has resulted in the deaths of over 200 Palestinians and 10 Israelis.
The students had demanded that McGill University take a stance against the violence and show support for the Palestinian people. They also called for the university to divest from companies that profit from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
However, after 10 days of fasting, the students announced on Wednesday that they would be ending their hunger strike. In a statement, they explained that they had achieved their goal of bringing attention to the issue and starting a conversation on campus.
“We are grateful for the support we have received from our fellow students and the wider community,” the statement read. “We believe that our hunger strike has brought attention to the ongoing violence and human rights violations in Palestine and has sparked important conversations on campus.”
The students also acknowledged that their demands may not have been met, but they remain hopeful that their actions will lead to change in the future.
“We understand that our demands may not have been met immediately, but we hope that our efforts will contribute to a larger movement towards justice and peace in the region,” the statement continued.
The hunger strike received mixed reactions from the McGill community, with some showing support for the students’ cause while others criticized their methods.
In response to the protest, McGill University released a statement reaffirming its commitment to freedom of expression and dialogue on campus.
“While we respect the right of our students to express their opinions and engage in peaceful protest, we also recognize the importance of respectful and constructive dialogue on complex and sensitive issues,” the statement read.
The university also stated that it does not take a stance on political issues and remains committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, the students hope that their actions will inspire others to speak out and take a stand for justice and peace in the region.
