Real True News

London, ON – After a thorough investigation, a London police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a fatal car crash that claimed the life of a retired principal.

The incident occurred on October 15, 2020, when the officer was responding to a call for assistance. While driving through an intersection, the officer’s vehicle collided with a car driven by 72-year-old retired principal, John Smith. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death, was called in to investigate the crash.

After a detailed examination of the evidence, including witness statements, video footage, and forensic analysis, the SIU concluded that the officer had not committed any criminal offense.

According to the SIU report, the officer was driving within the speed limit and had activated the emergency lights and siren before entering the intersection. The report also stated that Smith had failed to yield the right of way to the police vehicle.

The SIU director, Joseph Martino, stated that the officer’s actions were in accordance with the law and that there was no evidence to suggest any misconduct or negligence on the part of the officer.

The London Police Service also conducted an internal review of the incident and found that the officer had followed all protocols and procedures.

In a statement released by the London Police Service, Chief Steve Williams expressed his condolences to the family and friends of John Smith and stated that the officer involved has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

The SIU’s findings have been welcomed by the London Police Association, who stated that the officer had been unfairly criticized in the media and on social media platforms.

The SIU’s investigation into the incident has now been concluded, and the case has been closed. The London Police Service and the SIU have both extended their sympathies to the family of John Smith during this difficult time.
