Radon testing opportunities return to the Central Okanagan

Radon testing opportunities have returned to the Central Okanagan, providing residents with a chance to ensure the safety of their homes. The Central Okanagan Regional District (CORD) has announced that they will be offering free radon testing kits to interested homeowners.

Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that is naturally present in the environment. It is formed from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. When radon is released from the ground, it can seep into buildings and accumulate to dangerous levels. Exposure to high levels of radon has been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer.

In an effort to raise awareness and promote safety, CORD has partnered with the BC Lung Association to offer free radon testing kits to residents in the Central Okanagan. These kits will be available for pick up at various locations throughout the region, including municipal offices, libraries, and community centers.

Residents who are interested in testing their homes for radon can simply pick up a kit, follow the instructions provided, and send the kit back for analysis. The results will be sent directly to the homeowner, along with recommendations for next steps if high levels of radon are detected.

According to CORD, the testing kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to one per household. The program is open to all residents in the Central Okanagan, regardless of whether they own or rent their home.

This initiative is part of CORD’s ongoing efforts to promote public health and safety in the region. By providing free radon testing kits, they hope to encourage residents to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their families from potential health risks.

The radon testing program will run until the end of March, giving residents ample time to pick up a kit and conduct the test. CORD is also planning to host a series of information sessions to educate the public about radon and its potential dangers.

In addition to the free testing kits, CORD is also offering a limited number of subsidized radon mitigation systems for eligible low-income households. These systems are designed to reduce the levels of radon in a home and can be installed by a certified professional.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to test their homes for radon and ensure the safety of their loved ones. For more information on the radon testing program and to find a pick-up location near you, visit the CORD website or contact your local municipal office. Let’s work together to keep our community safe and healthy.
