The community of Natuashish, located in northern Labrador, was struck with tragedy on the evening of September 8th, as the band council office and cultural stage were engulfed in flames and burned to the ground. This devastating event occurred just hours after the community’s band council election.
According to reports, the fire broke out around 9:30 pm and quickly spread, leaving the buildings completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have started in the band council office before spreading to the cultural stage.
The Natuashish band council election, which took place earlier that day, saw a new chief and council elected to lead the community. The newly elected chief, John Nui, expressed his shock and sadness at the destruction of these important buildings in the community.
The band council office served as a hub for community services, including social assistance, housing, and education. The cultural stage was a vital space for community gatherings and events, as well as a place to showcase and celebrate the rich Indigenous culture of the Innu people.
The loss of these buildings is not only a blow to the community of Natuashish, but also to the Innu Nation as a whole. In a statement, Innu Nation Grand Chief Etienne Rich said, “This is a devastating loss for the community of Natuashish and for the Innu Nation. These buildings were not just structures, they were symbols of our resilience and our culture.”
The community is now left to pick up the pieces and rebuild. The Natuashish band council has already begun working on a plan to provide temporary services to community members while they work towards rebuilding the band council office. The cultural stage, however, may take longer to replace as it held significant cultural and historical value.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the community is coming together to support each other during this difficult time. The RCMP and fire department are investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of community and the resilience of the Innu people. The community of Natuashish will undoubtedly come together to rebuild and continue to celebrate their culture and traditions.
