The Yates Cup is back and Laurier University is ready to take on the challenge. After a hard-fought season, the Golden Hawks have secured their spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football championship game.
The team’s journey to the Yates Cup began with a strong regular season, finishing with a record of 7-1. They then went on to defeat the Western Mustangs in the OUA semifinals, earning their spot in the championship game.
This will be Laurier’s first appearance in the Yates Cup since 2016, where they were defeated by the Western Mustangs. The team is determined to come out on top this time around and bring the cup back to their university.
In other local sports news, runners from Ursuline College and Chatham-Kent Secondary School (CKSS) will be competing at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) cross country championships.
Ursuline’s senior girls team, consisting of Emma Pegg, Madison Broad, and Madison Segeren, will be representing their school at the OFSAA championships. The team has had a successful season, with Pegg finishing first in the SWOSSAA championships and Broad finishing second.
CKSS will also be sending a strong team to OFSAA, with both the senior boys and senior girls teams qualifying for the championships. The senior boys team, led by captain Ethan Jordan, finished first in the SWOSSAA championships, while the senior girls team, led by captain Madison Segeren, finished second.
The OFSAA cross country championships will take place on November 2nd in Sudbury, Ontario. Good luck to all the local athletes competing and congratulations to Laurier University on their return to the Yates Cup.
