The Ottawa Senators have announced that defenseman Dennis Gilbert has been traded to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round draft pick.
Gilbert, 24, was acquired by the Senators in a trade with the Nashville Predators in March 2021. He played in 11 games for the Senators, recording one assist and 12 penalty minutes.
The Chicago native was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round of the 2015 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks in the 2019-2020 season, playing in 21 games and registering one goal and two assists.
Gilbert brings a physical presence to the ice, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 227 pounds. He is known for his strong defensive play and his willingness to drop the gloves when necessary.
The Senators’ general manager, Pierre Dorion, expressed his gratitude for Gilbert’s time with the team, stating, “We would like to thank Dennis for his contributions to the Senators organization and wish him all the best in Dallas.”
The Stars, who finished fourth in the Central Division last season, are looking to bolster their defensive depth with the addition of Gilbert. He will join a strong defensive core that includes players like John Klingberg, Esa Lindell, and Miro Heiskanen.
Gilbert’s departure from the Senators comes as the team continues to make changes and rebuild their roster. The Senators finished last in the North Division last season and are looking to make significant improvements in the upcoming season.
The trade also gives the Senators an additional draft pick in 2022, adding to their already impressive collection of draft picks in the upcoming years.
Fans of the Senators will have to wait and see how Gilbert’s departure will impact the team’s performance on the ice. But one thing is for sure, the Senators are determined to make changes and improve their roster as they strive to become a competitive team in the NHL once again.
