Lethbridge brothers plead guilty to attempted murder charges
Two brothers from Lethbridge, Alberta have pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder in connection with a violent incident that occurred last year.
According to court documents, the brothers, aged 22 and 24, were involved in a physical altercation with a 27-year-old man on August 15, 2020. The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The brothers were initially charged with aggravated assault, but the charges were later upgraded to attempted murder.
During their court appearance on Monday, the brothers entered guilty pleas to the charges of attempted murder. The Crown prosecutor has requested a sentence of 10 years in prison for each brother.
The defence lawyers for the brothers have requested a more lenient sentence, citing their young age and lack of prior criminal record.
The judge has reserved sentencing until a later date, but has ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared for both brothers.
The victim, who has not been named, is said to be recovering from his injuries.
This case has sparked concern in the community, with many questioning the prevalence of violence in the city. Lethbridge has seen a rise in violent crimes in recent years, with the number of reported incidents increasing by 10% in 2020.
The Lethbridge Police Service has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or criminal activity.
The sentencing for the brothers is set to take place in the coming weeks, and the community will be closely following the outcome of this case.
