Anti-abortion billboards in West Kelowna, B.C. to be taken down

West Kelowna, BC – A series of anti-abortion billboards have sparked controversy in the community, with some residents expressing concern over the messaging and placement of the ads.

The billboards, which feature a photo of a fetus and the words “Abortion kills children,” were put up by the Kelowna Right to Life Society. They can be seen along major roads in West Kelowna, including Highway 97 and Highway 97C.

According to the society’s president, Marlon Bartram, the goal of the billboards is to raise awareness about the issue of abortion and to encourage people to consider alternatives.

“We want to start a conversation about the value of human life and the impact of abortion on our society,” Bartram said in an interview with Global News.

However, not everyone in the community agrees with the society’s approach. Some residents have expressed concern over the graphic nature of the billboards and their placement in highly visible areas.

“I think it’s inappropriate to have these kinds of images in such a public space,” said West Kelowna resident, Sarah Thompson. “It’s a sensitive issue and I don’t think it’s fair to force people to see these images without their consent.”

Others have also raised concerns about the accuracy of the messaging on the billboards. The statement “Abortion kills children” has been disputed by medical professionals and pro-choice advocates, who argue that a fetus is not considered a child until it is born.

In response to these criticisms, Bartram stated that the society stands by their messaging and believes it is important to highlight the potential consequences of abortion.

“We understand that not everyone will agree with our message, but we believe it is important to have these conversations and to raise awareness about the issue,” Bartram said.

The billboards have also caught the attention of local politicians, with West Kelowna Mayor Gord Milsom stating that the city has received numerous complaints about the ads.

“We are aware of the billboards and we have received complaints from residents,” Milsom said in a statement. “However, as a municipality, we do not have the authority to remove them as they are on private property.”

The controversy surrounding the billboards has sparked discussions about the limits of free speech and the responsibility of advertisers to consider the impact of their messaging on the community.

As of now, there are no plans to remove the billboards, but the debate over their presence in West Kelowna continues.
