COVID-19 vaccine protects pregnant women from getting severely ill, study finds

A recent study has found that the COVID-19 vaccine can protect pregnant women from becoming severely ill with the virus.

The study, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, analyzed data from over 35,000 pregnant women who received the COVID-19 vaccine. It found that the vaccine was 82% effective in preventing severe illness from the virus.

This is a significant finding, as pregnant women are at a higher risk of developing severe complications from COVID-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pregnant women are more likely to be hospitalized and require intensive care if they contract the virus.

Dr. Linda Eckert, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study, says that this research provides much-needed reassurance for pregnant women.

“It’s really important for pregnant women to know that the vaccine is safe and effective for them,” she said.

The study also found that the vaccine was 90% effective in preventing hospitalizations and 91% effective in preventing ICU admissions among pregnant women.

Dr. Denise Jamieson, chair of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study, says that these results are encouraging.

“This is really good news for pregnant women,” she said. “It’s important for them to know that the vaccine can protect them and their babies from severe illness.”

The study also looked at the safety of the vaccine for pregnant women and found no increased risk of adverse effects compared to non-pregnant women.

Dr. Eckert emphasizes the importance of pregnant women getting vaccinated, especially as the highly contagious Delta variant continues to spread.

“We know that pregnant women are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and we also know that the vaccine is safe and effective for them,” she said. “It’s really important for pregnant women to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their babies.”

The CDC and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) both recommend that pregnant women get vaccinated against COVID-19. ACOG also advises that pregnant women discuss the benefits and risks of the vaccine with their healthcare provider.

In conclusion, this study provides strong evidence that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for pregnant women, and can protect them from severe illness. Pregnant women are encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their babies from the virus.
