Savannah Guthrie posts message to her mother’s kidnapper asking to provide proof she is alive

Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show, has a powerful message for the mother of her kidnapper. In an emotional interview with People magazine, Guthrie shared her thoughts on the recent release of her kidnapper’s mother, who had been serving a prison sentence for her involvement in the crime.

Guthrie was just 16 years old when she was abducted at knifepoint by Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, in 2002. She was held captive for nine months before being rescued by police. Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison, while Barzee was sentenced to 15 years. However, Barzee was released from prison in September 2018, much to Guthrie’s shock and dismay.

In her interview with People, Guthrie expressed her disbelief and anger at Barzee’s release, stating, “I was just so angry that she was out and free and living her life.” She also shared her thoughts on Barzee’s role in her kidnapping, saying, “I don’t think she was just a bystander. I think she was an active participant.”

Guthrie’s message to Barzee’s mother is one of empathy and understanding. She acknowledges that Barzee’s mother may have been a victim of her husband’s manipulation and control, just as Guthrie herself was. She also recognizes that Barzee’s mother may have been unaware of the full extent of her daughter’s involvement in the kidnapping.

However, Guthrie also makes it clear that she holds Barzee’s mother accountable for her actions. She states, “I think she should have been held accountable for what she did. I think she should have served her full sentence.” Guthrie believes that Barzee’s release sends a dangerous message to other potential accomplices in similar crimes.

Despite her anger and disappointment, Guthrie also expresses forgiveness towards Barzee’s mother. She says, “I don’t hold any ill will towards her. I hope she’s found peace and I hope she’s found a way to make amends for what she did.”

Guthrie’s message to Barzee’s mother is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of her kidnapping. She hopes that her story will serve as a cautionary tale and prevent similar crimes from happening in the future. As for Barzee’s mother, Guthrie’s message is one of understanding, but also a call for accountability and justice.
