Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on the hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” has passed away at the age of 49 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The news of Dane’s death was confirmed by his publicist, who stated that the actor died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by his loved ones.
Dane was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2018. The progressive neurodegenerative disease affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually death.
Despite his diagnosis, Dane continued to work and appeared in several projects, including the HBO series “Euphoria” and the film “The Last Ship.”
His former co-stars and colleagues from “Grey’s Anatomy” took to social media to pay tribute to the actor. Ellen Pompeo, who played his on-screen love interest, wrote, “We lost a beloved member of our Grey’s family. Rest in peace, Eric Dane. My heart is with your family and all that knew and loved you.”
Show creator Shonda Rhimes also shared her condolences, saying, “Eric brought so much joy and heart to our set every day. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
Dane’s death has brought attention to ALS and the need for more research and support for those affected by the disease. According to the ALS Association, approximately 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with ALS each year, and there is currently no cure.
Dane’s family has asked for privacy during this time, and a private memorial service will be held in his honor.
The entertainment industry has lost a talented and beloved actor, and Dane’s legacy will continue to live on through his work and the impact he made on those around him. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
