Granby Zoo Employees Continue Strike for Second Day

The Granby Zoo in Quebec, Canada is facing its second day of employee strikes as workers demand better working conditions and higher wages. This is the second strike in less than a month, with the first occurring on June 11th.

The strike, organized by the Syndicat des employés du Zoo de Granby (SEZG), represents over 200 employees at the popular tourist attraction. The union is seeking a 3% wage increase for its members, as well as improved working conditions and job security.

According to SEZG president, Nathalie Fontaine, the employees have been working without a contract since December 2020 and have not received a wage increase in over two years. She also stated that the zoo has been making record profits, yet the workers have not seen any benefits.

The strike has caused the zoo to close its doors to the public, with only essential services such as animal care and security being maintained. This has resulted in disappointed visitors and financial losses for the zoo.

In response to the strike, the zoo’s management has stated that they are willing to negotiate with the union, but that their demands are not feasible given the current financial situation caused by the pandemic. They also claim that the union’s demands would result in a significant increase in ticket prices for visitors.

The strike has received support from other unions, including the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), who have called on the zoo’s management to negotiate in good faith and find a resolution to the strike.

The Granby Zoo is a popular tourist destination, attracting over 500,000 visitors each year. It is known for its wide variety of animals and its commitment to conservation and education.

As the strike continues, the future of the zoo remains uncertain. Both the union and management are hopeful that a resolution can be reached soon, but until then, the zoo will remain closed to the public.
