Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse faced disappointment on Tuesday as he failed to qualify for the Olympic 200-metre final.
De Grasse, who won bronze in the 100-metre race on Sunday, was unable to secure a spot in the final after finishing fifth in his semi-final heat with a time of 20.13 seconds.
The 26-year-old athlete had high hopes for the 200-metre event, having won silver in the same race at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
However, De Grasse faced tough competition from other top sprinters, including American Noah Lyles and Canadian teammate Aaron Brown.
Despite his best efforts, De Grasse was unable to keep up with the pack and secure a spot in the final.
This marks a disappointing turn of events for De Grasse, who had been performing well in the lead-up to the Olympics. He had won the 200-metre race at the Diamond League meet in Monaco just two weeks ago.
De Grasse’s coach, Rana Reider, expressed his disappointment in the outcome, stating that De Grasse had been dealing with a minor hamstring injury leading up to the race.
Despite the setback, De Grasse will still have a chance to compete for a medal in the 4×100-metre relay later this week.
The Olympic 200-metre final will take place on Wednesday, with Lyles and Brown representing Canada in the race.
De Grasse’s performance in the 100-metre race, where he finished behind Italian sprinter Lamont Marcell Jacobs and American Fred Kerley, has still earned him a spot on the podium and a bronze medal for Canada.
While De Grasse may have fallen short in the 200-metre event, his determination and talent have not gone unnoticed. He will continue to be a strong contender in future competitions and a source of pride for Canada.
