The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant move in the NHL trade market, acquiring forward Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Ottawa’s fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft.
The 19-year-old Russian winger was selected 10th overall by the Canucks in the 2019 draft and has since played for SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. Podkolzin is known for his strong skating ability and physical play, making him a promising addition to the Oilers’ lineup.
This trade comes as a surprise to many, as Podkolzin was expected to make his NHL debut with the Canucks this upcoming season. However, with the Oilers’ need for a young, skilled forward, they were willing to part with their future draft pick to secure Podkolzin’s services.
Oilers’ general manager Ken Holland expressed his excitement for the trade, stating, “We believe Vasily has the potential to be a top-six forward in the NHL and we are thrilled to have him join our organization.”
On the other hand, Canucks’ GM Jim Benning acknowledged the difficult decision to trade Podkolzin but believes it was necessary for the team’s long-term success. “We wish Vasily all the best in Edmonton and we are confident he will have a successful career in the NHL,” said Benning.
Podkolzin is expected to join the Oilers for training camp and compete for a spot on the roster for the upcoming season. With his talent and potential, he could be a valuable asset for the team in their pursuit of a Stanley Cup.
This trade also marks the first time the Oilers and Canucks have made a trade since 2016, when the Oilers acquired forward Patrick Maroon from the Canucks.
Only time will tell how this trade will impact both teams in the long run, but for now, the Oilers have added a promising young player to their roster and the Canucks have secured a future draft pick.
