Suspect charged with 2nd-degree murder 1 year after Smithers, B.C., shooting

A year after a fatal shooting in Smithers, British Columbia, a suspect has been charged with second-degree murder.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), 27-year-old Austin Nikirk was arrested and charged on Tuesday in connection with the death of 25-year-old Joshua Melvin Bredo.

The shooting took place on December 23, 2019, in the 4000 block of Third Avenue in Smithers. Bredo was found with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation has been ongoing for the past year, with the RCMP’s North District Major Crime Unit leading the case. The unit worked closely with the BC Prosecution Service to gather evidence and build a case against Nikirk.
