A second man has been arrested and is facing nearly 100 charges in connection to an ongoing auto fraud investigation in Toronto.
According to Toronto police, the 35-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday and is facing a total of 97 charges, including fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, and identity theft.
The investigation began in October 2020 when a victim reported that their vehicle had been fraudulently leased and then sold to an unsuspecting buyer. Further investigation revealed that multiple vehicles had been fraudulently leased and sold, resulting in significant financial losses for the victims.
The first arrest in this case was made in December 2020, when a 33-year-old man was charged with 97 offences, including fraud over $5,000, identity theft, and possession of property obtained by crime.
Police believe that the two men worked together to carry out the fraudulent scheme, targeting luxury vehicles such as BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. They are also reminding the public to be cautious when purchasing a vehicle and to thoroughly research the seller and the vehicle’s history.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on February 25.
