The United Kingdom government has called for an investigation by FIFA into Argentina’s display of a banner referencing the Falkland Islands during their World Cup 2026 qualifier match against Chile.
The banner, which read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (The Falklands are Argentine), was unfurled by Argentine fans during the match on Thursday. This display has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the politicization of sports.
In a statement, the UK government expressed their disappointment and urged FIFA to take action. “We strongly condemn the use of sporting events for political purposes,” the statement read. “The Falkland Islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory and the people of the Falklands have chosen to be British. This is a fundamental right that should be respected.”
The Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas in Argentina, have been a source of tension between the two countries for decades. In 1982, Argentina invaded the islands, leading to a brief war with the UK. The conflict ended with the UK regaining control of the islands.
The UK government’s call for a FIFA investigation has been supported by Falkland Islands lawmakers. In a statement, MLA Roger Edwards said, “We are deeply disappointed by the actions of the Argentine fans. This is a clear attempt to politicize a sporting event and we urge FIFA to take appropriate action.”
FIFA has yet to release a statement regarding the incident, but this is not the first time the organization has been faced with political displays during matches. In 2018, FIFA fined the Mexican Football Federation for their fans’ use of a homophobic chant during a World Cup match.
The use of sporting events for political purposes is a violation of FIFA’s regulations, and the organization has the power to impose sanctions on member associations. It remains to be seen what action, if any, FIFA will take in response to the UK government’s request.
In the meantime, the UK government has reiterated their commitment to the Falkland Islands and their right to self-determination. “We will continue to stand by the people of the Falkland Islands and their right to determine their own future,” the statement concluded.
