The leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh, is not eager to call for a federal election, according to his top adviser.
In an interview with CTV News, Singh’s chief of staff, Jennifer Howard, stated that the party is focused on their work in Parliament and is not actively seeking an election.
Howard emphasized that the NDP’s priority is to continue advocating for Canadians and pushing for progressive policies, rather than rushing into an election.
She also addressed the recent speculation about a potential election, stating that it is ultimately up to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to decide when to call for one.
Singh’s stance on the matter aligns with his previous statements, where he has expressed a desire to continue working with the minority Liberal government to deliver results for Canadians.
The NDP leader has also emphasized the importance of addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on Canadians, rather than focusing on political games.
Howard also highlighted the NDP’s recent successes in influencing government policies, such as securing paid sick leave for workers and pushing for a wealth tax on the ultra-rich.
She stated that the party will continue to work towards their goals and will be ready for an election if one is called, but their main focus remains on serving Canadians.
The NDP currently holds 24 seats in the House of Commons, making them the fourth-largest party in Parliament. They have been a key player in the minority government, often holding the balance of power in crucial votes.
As for when an election may be called, Howard stated that the NDP is prepared for any scenario and will be ready to campaign whenever necessary.
For now, the party remains focused on their work in Parliament and serving the needs of Canadians during these challenging times.
