Calgary hiker hospitalized following Friday morning bear attack in Crowsnest area

A Calgary hiker was hospitalized on Friday morning after being attacked by a bear in the Crowsnest area.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the hiker was on a trail near the Crowsnest Pass Golf Course. The hiker, who has not been identified, was reportedly alone at the time of the attack.

The hiker was able to call for help and was found by a group of other hikers who immediately called 911. Emergency services arrived on the scene and the hiker was transported to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Conservation officers were also called to the scene and are currently investigating the incident. They have not yet determined the type of bear involved in the attack.

In a statement, Alberta Fish and Wildlife spokesperson, Brendan Cox, reminded hikers to be cautious and aware of their surroundings when in bear country. He also advised hikers to carry bear spray and make noise while hiking to avoid surprising any bears.

This is the second bear attack in the Crowsnest area this year. In May, a woman was attacked by a grizzly bear while hiking in the same area. She sustained serious injuries but has since recovered.

Officials are reminding hikers to always be prepared and take necessary precautions when venturing into bear country. They also urge anyone who encounters a bear to remain calm and slowly back away while facing the bear.

The Crowsnest Pass Golf Course has been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure while officials continue their investigation.
