AEDs installed on the North Shore’s Grouse Grind trail

A new safety measure has been implemented on the popular Grouse Grind trail on the North Shore. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been installed along the trail to provide emergency assistance in case of cardiac arrest.

The installation of these AEDs was a joint effort between the North Shore Rescue team and the District of North Vancouver. The decision was made after a hiker suffered a cardiac arrest on the trail last year and unfortunately did not survive.

According to North Shore Rescue team leader Mike Danks, the installation of AEDs on the Grouse Grind trail was a necessary step to ensure the safety of hikers. He stated, “The Grouse Grind is a challenging hike and we have seen cases of cardiac arrest in the past. Having AEDs along the trail will greatly increase the chances of survival for anyone experiencing a cardiac emergency.”

The AEDs are strategically placed at three different locations along the trail, including the halfway point, the three-quarter mark, and at the top of the trail. Each AED is equipped with step-by-step instructions and voice prompts to guide users through the process of administering CPR and using the device.

The District of North Vancouver has also provided training for North Shore Rescue team members on how to use the AEDs. In addition, signs have been placed along the trail to inform hikers of the AED locations and how to access them in case of an emergency.

The installation of AEDs on the Grouse Grind trail is a proactive measure to ensure the safety of hikers. It is a reminder to always be prepared for any situation while enjoying outdoor activities. The AEDs will provide a sense of security for hikers and their loved ones, knowing that help is readily available in case of a medical emergency.

Hikers are reminded to always hike with a partner, stay hydrated, and listen to their bodies. In case of any medical emergency, they are advised to call 911 and use the AEDs if necessary.

The installation of AEDs on the Grouse Grind trail is a positive step towards promoting safety and well-being in our community. It is a reminder to always be prepared and to take necessary precautions while enjoying the beautiful trails of the North Shore.
